Advantages (and disadvantages):
Traditional Indemnity plan with High deductible:
Features: If you need little besides the yearly check-up, these
plans can prove easy and cost effective. You have an unrestricted
choice of doctors, and a wide range of services are covered.
Downside: You are footing the bill until you meet your deductible.
HMO:
Features: HMO's are simple and fairly economical, requiring only
a low co-payment with each visit. Busy familys will appreciate
the ease.
Downside: Doctors must be in the HMO network; for a specialist
you'll need a referral from your primary doctor.
Preferred Provider Organization:
Features: Have very large networks offering both primary and
specialty care - you may never need to go out of network. There
usually aren't strict service areas, which is helpful when you're
traveling.
Downside: If you are not in the network of PPO providers, there
will be a penalty of normally 20%.
Health Savings Accounts.
Features: These combine the Indemnity plans or PPO plans with
a flexible spending account for health-care expenses. Not available
for large companies. Excellent for nontraditional services (e.g.
acupuncture). You are eligable to open an HSA account. See
HSA
Downside: You are footing the bill until you meet your deductible.
